Because the audience, upon whom he is to work, is diversified, he should not continuously teach in the same tone, rather, in respect of the differences in his congregation, comfort for a while, frighten, scold, offer reconciliation, and so on. Seems to me that if the preacher is a carpenter, Luther's favorite tool was the hammer. He found a lot of nails in his audience that needed a pounding.
